COURSES OFFERED:

Advance Medical Interpreting: Pediatrics – Instructor: Jose Torres (.8 CEU: 6 hours classroom; 2 hours home study)

This course will help prepare participants to interpret in both routine and complex pediatric settings by practicing modification of interpreting techniques with children, using mock scenarios and role play activities. During the training session students will become familiar with relevant terminology and medical procedures so that they are able to deliver accurate and complete interpreting in pediatric settings. Focus age group will be birth through 12 years of age.

Advanced Interpreting Technique – Instructor: Gaby Flores (.5 CEU: 5 hours classroom; 0 hours home study)

This course will provide students the opportunity to practice interpreting intervention skills with more complex encounters and cultural issues. Upon completion, the student will be able to effectively manage the flow of an interpreted encounter and transition between different roles.

Advanced Medical Interpreting Skills – Instructor: Gaby Flores (.5 CEU: 5 hours classroom; 0 hours home study)

This course provides students with the opportunity to engage in mock medical interpreting scenarios, with advanced terminology specifically for the emergency department, labor and delivery department, and outpatient surgery department. On completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate skill in delivering accurate and complete interpreting for complex medical scenarios.

Advanced Medical Interpreting: Women’s Health, Labor and Delivery – Instructor: Gaby Flores (.6 CEU: 5 hours classroom; 1 hours home study)

This course will prepare participants for interpretation during routine women’s health care, pregnancy care, labor and delivery. Upon completion, students will be familiar with related terminology and medical procedures and able to deliver accurate and complete interpreting during the labor and delivery process.

Advanced Medical Interpreting: Mental Health – Instructor: Adrian Ruiz (.6 CEU: 5 hours classroom; 1 hours home study)

This course will provide participants the opportunity to learn and apply medical terminology and specialized techniques to mental health related interpreting sessions. Participants will review both common and complex mental disorders, self-care for interpreters, and explore their role as a member of the care team. Using mock scenarios and role play activities, students will get real-time practice and feedback on skills. Participants will complete approximately two hours of work study activities focused on new vocabulary prior to the session.

Cultural Competency for Interpreters – Instructor: Gaby Flores (.5 CEU: 5 hours classroom; 0 hours home study)

This course will allow students the opportunity to explore their own cultural competence knowledge, and to develop skills and strategies for cross-cultural interactions. Upon completion, students will be able to develop a working definition of cultural competency in the medical setting, and increase their own cultural awareness through exercises and scenarios.

Understanding Medical Interpreter Certification – Instructor: TBA (.7 CEU: 5 hours classroom; 2 hours home study)

This course will allow students to become familiar with the types of certification testing available in the industry. Students will prepare for both written and oral tests through review of interpreting fundamentals, medical vocabulary, and mock scenarios.

Interpreting for Teen Patients – Instructor: Rio Zamarron (.6 CEU: 5 hours classroom; 1 hours home study)

This course will help prepare participants to interpret in both routine and complex medical settings by practicing modification of interpreting techniques with teen-aged patients, using mock scenarios and role playing activities. During the training session students will become familiar with relevant terminology and medical procedures so that they are able to deliver accurate and complete interpreting. Focus age group will be 12-18 years of age.

Legal Issues and Language Access – Instructor: TBA (.6 CEU: 5 hours classroom; 1 hours home study)

This course will provide students an overview of key legal issues relative to language access: Title VI of the 1964 civil Rights Act, CLAS standards, EMTALA and HIPAA. Students will analyze the legal implications utilizing case law scenarios. Upon completion, students will be able to describe and define each key legal issue.

PRE-REQUISITES:

  • Full written and oral bilingual proficiency.
  • Currently active as an interpreter in community services, social services, or healthcare settings.
  • Bridging the Gap, Community Interpreter, or equivalent course.
  • Must have bilingual dictionary in your target language and English.
